Romain Plancherel, Intendant at Portes des Iris

As of January 2025, we have a new Intendant at Portes des Iris!

A key position for every event, since he’s in direct contact with our caterers, our teams of extras, but also our customers.

Let’s get to know him a little better…

Tell us more about yourself:

I’m 24 and I’m from Orbe! I did all my schooling there and that’s where I’ve lived all my life. At the age of 15, I started an apprenticeship as an electrical fitter, then switched to the profession of operating officer and successfully obtained my CFC in 2024.

I joined the Portes des Iris team in January 2025, as an Intendant, and enjoy working both outdoors, sprucing up the spaces, and indoors, keeping them clean and ready for our events.

On my days off, I like to get out with my friends, go hiking and discovering new places. I like to meet new people at parties and DIY is my passion.

My biggest dream: to become a parachutist.

 

Why Portes des Iris?

I didn’t know the field at all, but I discovered the diversity of the locations during an internship, and the job immediately appealed to me, because of its variety, the fact that I get to work both as part of a team and individually, and the prestigious events I get to take part in.

 

 

What are your main duties?

– Cleaning up after each event
– Setting up rooms before each event
– Preparing the inventory of crockery and cutlery
– Welcoming and training the team of cleaners
– Welcoming and training the team of washer-ups
– Maintaining the outside areas: lawn, hedge trimming, planting, cleaning flagstones, raking gravel, etc.

 

What seems essential to me in the support I can give customers

I like to be on hand to solve any problems customers may have in organizing their big day: lending them an extension lead, an adapter, adding extra furniture or crockery if necessary, etc.

I really enjoy the diversity of the events: the origins and customs of the different weddings, the koshering of our kitchens, the installation of weddings in spaces dedicated in our Garden.

 

 

 

My role on D-day

Welcome our customers in the best conditions: a warm welcome:

  • direct vehicles in our various parking lots, barn, caterer access
  • assist the cloackroom team
  • ensure that the technical equipment is working perfectly in the ceremony/conference rooms
  • welcome the caterer, ensure that all equipment is available, and that the kitchens and plungers are working at all times
  • be available to service providers if required (technical challenges)
  • support the coordinator (set up additional furniture, welcome sign, easels, table names, place cards, etc.)
  • set up chairs / benches / lecterns / umbrellas for ceremonies
  • light the fire in our chimney
  • set up chairs / benches / lecterns / umbrellas for ceremonies
  • ensure the safety of the site during fireworks displays
  • enforce the rules and regulations of Portes des Iris, in order to respect its status as a listed historic monument (no nails, screws, confetti, etc.) and ensure the smooth running of events (max 93db, windows closed from midnight, respect for music end times both indoors and outdoors)

The bridal procession for a civil or secular ceremony: an entrance filled with meaning

The bridal procession is much more than a simple parade. It’s a symbolic way of announcing the arrival of the bride and groom, spotlighting their loved ones, and setting the tone for the ceremony.

Traditional organization

In the classical tradition, the order of the procession is carefully structured:

– Children of honor: carrying flowers or wedding rings, they lead the way with magical innocence.

– Witnesses and bridesmaids: accompanying the bride and groom, they play a key role, supporting them every step of the way.

– The groom: usually arriving on the arm of his mother, he embodies the solemnity of the moment.

– The bride: all eyes are on her as she advances, often on her father’s arm, to carefully chosen music.

 

Modern adaptations of wedding ceremonies

Today, couples like to personalize the moment. Some choose to enter together to symbolize equality in their union, while others prefer to integrate additional relatives or include culturally specific elements, such as traditional musicians or live singers.

Don’t forget to give parents who are not accompanying the bride and groom a choice. They’ll feel just as important!

A question that comes up a lot: which side should the groom stand on? the bride-to-be?

Traditionally, in the bridal procession, the groom walks to the right of the bride-to-be. This custom dates back to the Middle Ages, when the groom kept his right hand free to protect his bride in case of danger.

Today, this position is mostly symbolic. The bride walks on the left, on the side of the heart, which adds a romantic touch.

However, nothing prevents couples from modifying this order according to their desires or the organization of the ceremony. The important thing is that it suits them.

 

Ceremony exit: the start of the party

The ceremony exit is a moment of pure joy. It’s the moment when the bride and groom, now united, share their happiness with their guests. It can take place directly in the ceremony space, outside the room (if the ceremony is held indoors) or on our premises, often on one of our two terraces.

Timeless traditions

– Throwing rice or petals: a classic, symbolizing fertility and prosperity. At Portes des Iris, we only allow petals, but indoors and synthetic. Today, alternatives such as soap (or Champagne) bubbles are gaining in popularity.

– Hedge of honor: guests gather to form a festive aisle, creating a joyful atmosphere in the bride and groom’s colors.

– Ringing bells: a timeless way to mark the moment with flair, especially for religious weddings.

 

A more modern touch

Some couples opt for more contemporary elements:

– Colorful smoke bombs for a spectacular visual effect.

– Live music or a specially chosen tune to accompany their exit.

– Dove releases or even drones to immortalize the moment from the air.
